Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has welcomed the decision to host the Olympic Qualifier Series for the 2028 Los Angeles Games in Tokyo. On April 8, Governor Koike issued a statement regarding the announcement.
The Olympic Qualifier Series is an event that will feature six urban sports—including skateboarding and 3×3 basketball—across four cities. Tokyo is scheduled to host its leg from May 4 to 7, 2028, at locations such as Yoyogi Park. This marks the first time the event will be held in Japan.
Governor Koike’s statement reads as follows:
“I am deeply honored that Tokyo has been selected as a host city for the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS).
The urban sports featured in the OQS made their Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and they have continued to generate great excitement, especially among young people, forming a valuable legacy of that event.
Seeing young athletes compete at the highest level and push their limits will bring big dreams and hope to children around the world.
Moreover, the OQS will be held in the Yoyogi and Shibuya areas—a district synonymous with youth culture. This creates a perfect synergy between urban sports and youth culture, offering a tremendous opportunity to showcase Tokyo’s appeal to the world.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will leverage the operational expertise it has gained through international sports events such as the Tokyo 2020 Games, the World Athletics Championships, and the Deaflympics, and will support the successful staging of this event.”
