Social Security Confirms: 15 Years of Contributions Not Enough to Qualify for Your Pension

It is a common belief that simply having 15 years of employment contributions guarantees eligibility for a contributory pension in Spain, but the Social Security has clarified that an additional requirement often goes unnoticed. Even after decades of work, failing to meet this condition can block access to the retirement benefit.

Currently, the standard retirement age in 2026 is set at 66 years and 10 months for those with fewer than 38 years and 3 months of contributions. Those who surpass that threshold can retire at 65 without penalties. However, reaching the legal age with 15 years of contributions is not enough to automatically receive a contributory pension.

Spanish law imposes what is called the “specific waiting period” (carencia específica) – a crucial condition that is easily forgotten. This rule requires that, out of the minimum 15 years of contributions, at least two must fall within the 15 years immediately preceding retirement. In other words, someone who stopped working many years before reaching the legal retirement age may lose their right to a contributory pension, even if they have accumulated sufficient total contributions.

The Social Security emphasizes that this requirement remains fully in force and was not modified during the 2013 pension reform. It particularly affects workers with long periods of inactivity or those who left the labor market early, such as the unemployed over 55. Furthermore, experts note that gaps in contributions also directly reduce the final pension amount.

For self-employed workers, the situation is even more delicate, as months without activity often count with a zero base contribution. That is why many specialists recommend regularly reviewing one’s employment history and verifying well in advance that all requirements for accessing the contributory pension are met.
