Chelsea appear to be closing in on a permanent manager, with Xabi Alonso now the frontrunner for the role.
According to reports, the Blues have narrowed their search to three candidates to replace Liam Rosenior, but Alonso is widely considered the top choice to take over as head coach.
The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager is reportedly open to the move, despite the challenges that have faced previous Chelsea bosses.
Enzo Maresca stepped down after a falling out with the club’s owners, while Rosenior was dismissed when the season took a downturn.
Chelsea are also considering other names, including Fulham’s Marco Silva and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, who will be available on a free transfer this summer. Cesc Fabregas, now managing Como, has been linked as well, but the ex-Chelsea midfielder is expected to stay with the Serie A side for at least another season.
Sources indicate that Chelsea want to have their new manager in place by mid-next month. The incoming boss is expected to play a significant role in summer transfer plans and will have greater authority over player recruitment.
This lack of influence was reportedly a key factor behind Maresca’s abrupt departure after four years at the club. He had several disagreements with senior figures regarding transfers and squad building.
Rosenior, who arrived from RC Strasbourg mainly due to his connections with the BlueCo system, also struggled to command authority in the dressing room, sources say. Chelsea now appear more willing to grant greater power to an experienced figure with a stronger reputation.
Alonso is likely to demand that level of control before accepting the job, particularly as the club faces a major rebuild this summer.
On the pitch, the pressure is mounting. Chelsea are dealing with uncertainty surrounding key players such as Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer, while missing out on Champions League football could have financial consequences for senior squad members.
The Blues can still end the season with silverware, as they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final. However, there is growing belief within the club that another disappointing campaign cannot be tolerated.
