The actions of the absolute champion have stirred up a storm.
On May 10 local time, the men’s team final of the World Table Tennis Championships was held in London, UK. The world No. 1 Chinese team dominated world No. 4 Japan with a 3-0 shutout, claiming victory with an impressive performance.
While the win was fitting for a 12-time consecutive and 24-time overall world champion, it was what happened after the match that caused controversy.
After clinching the decisive third match with a 3-1 victory over Hayasuga Togami, Lin Shidong shook hands with the Japanese team, then jumped onto the table tennis table still wearing his shoes. The 21-year-old, drawing the attention of the entire venue, excitedly raised both hands and proudly displayed the Chinese flag printed on the left chest of his uniform.
It’s easy to imagine the excitement of breaking through rivals to become world champions, but this over-the-top celebration appeared provocative to many. Moreover, standing on the table goes against sportsmanship.
This has led to backlash for Lin Shidong even within China. According to Chinese media outlet *Fox News*, former national player and beloved national legend Chen Qi, who served as a commentator for the broadcast, expressed his disapproval: “Ah, standing on the table tennis table is absolutely not allowed!” He repeated, “This is definitely not okay. You must not stand on the table.”
During a flash interview after the match, an emotional Lin Shidong said with tears, “I sincerely thank the team and the coaches who guided me. This championship was not easy to achieve.”
The 21-year-old has been questioned about his manners, but it may just be a youthful indiscretion.
